Run for the Pasig River... are we really helping?

Last Sunday, I ran another 10K for the Philippine International Marathon, Run for the Pasig River (PIM). I was excited as this is my first race for the month of November (AKA Bday Month). I arrived, ran and finished the race in a normal way and nothing different from my previous races. What struck me the most are the litter around Quirino Grandstand. While I was looking for the booth for the certificates, I passed by the finishline and the stage, and saw a lot of papers, cups, and everything littered on the road. This question then struck my mind "shouldn't this race be clean, after all, this is for rehabilitating the Pasig River".

The litter in not techincally the problem of the race organizer but this should have been looked into as the race promotes cleaning the Pasig River. I hope, this message would be relayed to the organizers and ABS-CBN Foundation to see a litter free PIM 2010.

I was at my best in Adidas KOTR

This race is the 3rd part of my October running calendar. And boy, it was indeed sweet. I was able to register a new PR of 1:05:40. I ensured that I did check the time right before I step on the finishline mat. This new record is definitely much better than my best 1:09.

I did not do much preparation for this run as I ran a 21K the Sunday prior. Add to that the load in school, fashion week and all. I ran the Thursday before but for pure recreational and nothing serious or major. I went to Anne's place to do a sleep over to ensure I am not harrased when going to The Fort for the run. I even slept past my bed time at 11:00PM.

On the race day, I went to the venue with Minette and Anne and met Tin at ROX. We were a bunch of happy people as we are excited to see a lot of people in the start line. The field was literally swimming in yellow (bright I may add) as almost everyone wore their Adidas shirts. I checked in alone in the 10K chute as Tin (for some reasons I do not know) decided to run the 5K rather than our usual 10K. And at exactly 6:00AM, the gun was fired and off we go.

I was planning on not getting excited and pushing myself to the limit at the beginning of the race. I told myself that I should slow down and ensure I have a good split time (although honestly, there is no way for me to know). I paced myself in the 7:00 and so I thought. Everybody was passing by me at the beggining and I couldn't really care. My plan was clear, run the first 5K and do 3 minute walking for the latter part.

I was happy and contented with how I am doing. Upon the ascend along the Kalayaan flyover, I tried to remember the pointers Running Diva gave me during the QCIM - when ascending, look at your feet and not on the road ahead. This way, you will be distracted with the height of the challenge ahead. I did just that ad was successful. I crossed Kalayaan, Paseo de Roxas and Makati Ave with a breeze. I was very happy to see Petron Megaplaza because I now exactly know how far I am from the turn-around point. I then saw Mapua and was looking forward for a 3minute walk. Upon turning, I walked and then ran. I ran and ran until Kayalaan Flyover again. This time, the people who have overtook me are starting to slow down and I have overtaken them already. I walked again some more along Kalayaan and checked at my watch. It says 0:55. I computed the remaining distance at the fort and checked that I will still be able to make the 1:05 target. I strengthened my pace and was able to clock in at the finishline at 1:05:40. My plan was perfect. This is now my best record for a 10K. Afterwhich, the gruelling part where I have to look for everone started. It was indeed a huge crowd of 7,000 and finding 3 people is very hard.

Upon our reunion, we decided to eat breakfast and en route to the car (being escorted by P&G security - for Anne), we bumped into fellow P&G runners and they told us to wait for a bit to have our picture taken. We waited for a bit and took the group photo.

Below are the post-race pictures:

Scared of KOTR

Yes. I am scared of the Adidas KOTR. After my successful attempt of a half-marathon last Sunday, I tried running again last Thursday so just I am sure I can still run. But to my surprise, I was not able to run my usual route at the same pace and time as I usually do. I am mostly walking this time which led me thinking that this is because my muscles are still recovering from its first 21K.

This then face me some concerns for Adidas tomorrow. I am running 10K and what if I will not be able to finish it? Hopefully I do. I know that I just need recovery time.

Also, another part of me is scared of Adidas because of its logistics way back to the distribution of packets. They were quite unorganized and many people were upset of the way this was handled. Hopefully, the race wouldn't be as unorganized as the distribution. We'll just have to wait and see.

QCIM Result according to jazzrunner

While blog hopping (of runners), I came across jazzrunner's and saw that he had the times already for the QCIM. I immediately checked my time and according to the time chip, my time was 2:44:49 - not bad ey!

I still have to wait for the final official results with the details. Im looking forward to see my photos! :)

Thanks to Jazzrunner for the results!

I ran and finished my first half marathon

I did it.

Last mid of September, I decided that I will engage myself into a half marathon. I was contemplating on which one to join - either Milo Finals or QCIM. I decided to go for QCIM since I wanna gauge my 10K improvement via Milo and QCIM offers a finisher's medal for all half and full marathoners. After some preparations and excitement, the day has come. It was October 18, 2009. My first half marathon day.

There were seven of us in my barkada who decided to run the QCIM via different categories but only six of us actually ran due to some personal concerns of one of my friends. We arrived at the start line at 7:40 and was just enough for me to familiarize myself with the crowd and the pacers whom I am eyeing really to pace (2:45). I recognized the pacer of 2:30 as Rosell AKA Running Diva and decided to push myself to pace with them. I did just that and it was really worth it. Pacers proved to be a good help for first timers like me. I actually ran the first 14K (READ: RAN, no walking). I met some other Takbo.ph peeps and most importantly, Argonaut, who I was able to chat the night before via Takbo.ph. Towards 15K, my legs are starting to feel a little bit uneasy. I decided to take it slow and let the 2:45 pacers catch up with me. From then, I just relaxed and enjoy the feeling of running along commonwealth. It was my first time to run in an eight-lane road!

After sometime, during the 16K mark, I ran through Argo and told him that I'll pace him. I was able to do just that until 18K but he flew away and I was not able to catch up anymore. I paced myself but this time, I was feeling really tired. Both physically and emotionally. I decided to walk the 19K-21.5K and told myself that I will just run when I am about to cross the finish line. Upon looking at my watch for the last 1K. I saw that I can still make the 2:45 time as I have predicted and I ran for my life. I crossed the finish line at 2:45:16. I did it.

I was looking for my friends at the finishline but they were nowhere to be found. I walked towards the medal and certificate area and saw them. I claimed my medal and felt a great feeling when it was being placed around my neck. I am fulfilled I did this and I swore to myself that I will be better. 2:15 next 21K! Hahaha.

PS.
Thanks to the following: 1) Running Diva - for providing tips during the run and pacing us. 2) Argonaut - for pacing me at 16K-18K. Thanks for the help dude. 3) People pacing 2:30 - saya ng kwentuhan ng mga tao. It distracted me for quite sometime. Which is very good. 4) To Kristy -for the advise to eat something every 1hour. 5) Sir Rene, whom I looked up to while running and 6) QCIM organizers and everyone behind it -thanks for a job well done.

Congratulations are in order for all those who finished the race and most especially to Tin, my ultimate running-mate. :)

See you all at Adidas KOTR!!!
Me and my first running medal (hopefully, more to come):

I got loaded at the QCIM Carbo Loading Partee!!!

The QCIM carbo loading party was held yesterday at the Quezon City Circle. Upon entering the circle, we were directed by manong guard to go out again and re-enter after two gates. We did just that but was not able to find the appropriate gate. We then entered again the same gate - via a complete revolution on the circle and we were just directed to use the side streets. We were able to manage to get to the venue and to our surprise, the "activity center" was actually the center of QC circle. We were greeted with lights and sounds from the stage.

Upon arrival, we immediately signed-up in the registration area and proceeded to the venue where my friend Tin introduced me to some of her friends Richie, Jobax and Alfred (I hope I got their names right). At that time, the pacers are being introduced and I was able to see my pacer. I am deciding to run the half marathon at 7:30 pace.

I looked around and saw that I can recognize some faces. I saw the Kenyan Runners, sir Rene of the organizing group, Run Rio and Running Diva. I told myself - "heck, I would get photos of them". I approched them one by one and they were all nice. Running Diva even recognized me to my surprise. They are definitely accommodating and warm. Thanks to all those who have been intorduced to me. :) And here are the photos of last night's event:

Running Diva is proving why she was called a DIVA. Nice song Ms. Roselle.

The carbo loading party aims to set the mood for the marathon and show the crowd who will be the pacers and the people in the actual event. It was indeed a good experience to see a lot of people who are very much interested with running as I am. The QCIM looks to be promising and exciting as well. See you at the start line!

No Walking! Woohwoooh!!!

I was fulfilled. I was able to run the entire 5.36K (my normal training route) without walking. I have never done this and was able to do it tonight. Whew. I am fulfilled. I think this is a good sign that I will do very well at the QCIM. :)

Official Result for Milo Marathon Finals and Photos

Official Results are out and my stopwatch was pretty accurate. Based on my chip time, I registered 1:10:44. Here is a screenshot of my performance.

At first, I was hesitant to post it here since my results were not that fabulous but I still opted to do so since I know I will get better. I want to record honestly how I perform in each race I join.

The presence of Photovendo was also an addition to this year's final. I was lucky to have several photos and here are some which I could share. Mostly, these are the photos which I did not look stupid. I am placing some captions on what I am probably thinking that time.

"This is it, I can do this!"

"Breath in, breath out"

"Walang magulo! Pagod ako!!!"

My Milo Marathon National Finals 2009 Experience

The culminating activity of the Milo Marathon was held yesterday morning at the Quirino Grandstand. All 42K runners from the regional races who were able to make the cut-off time of 4:00 (I think) qualified to be part of the Milo Marathon National Finals. I woke up at around 5AM for this race and was glad that I no longer need to travel as my house is just a couple of blocks away from Luneta. I walked to the venue and arrived at 5:55. Enroute to Luneta, I passed by a convenience store to fill up one of my hydration bottles with a Gatorade. It was my first time to use my belt for a race and I was quite excited and feel professional altogether. Upon arriving at the venue, I saw that the start line was already filled with runners waiting for the gun start. And at 6AM, Mayor Alfredo Lim fired the gun and we're off to go.

Since the timing chip was used for this race, the start is like a bottle neck. The mat we need to cross was quite small and everybody waited for their turn to go about. I instantly started my running after I passed through the mat. I was pacing comfortably and was eyeing for someone I could pace (this is my new habit; pacing with someone I don't know. haha!). I saw this lady in mid-rib and I thought she is someone whom I could follow. Primarily because I think she is a pro and she could be easily distinguished from the green crowd. I did just that but at about 3K, I bid farewell to my pacer (who doesn't know I am pacing her) as I sarted to walk in preparation for the overpass we are about to reach. After a minute or so, I ran back and was able to climb the Buendia flyover without any problems. Walked a little at the top and resumed running downhill. I was very comfortable and was very happy with the first part of my run. I looked at my timer watch and saw that I clocked only 20 minutes in and I told myself that I am doing very well. I continued my running until I reached the turning point at Le Pavillion. I was then looking for a new pacer and I saw this guy clad in blue top. I immediately paced with him but after sometime I told myself that I could go faster. I did just that and overtook the guy. I was computing my time as I really wanted to get a new PR for this run. I was still at best when I started to feel tired. I decided to walk from Quirino to Rajah Sulayman. At this point, the blue guy passed me. I told myself that if I walk that distance, I will run the remainder to the finishline. I walked and immediately gained my running pace from Rajah Sulayman till UN Avenue. At this point, I was able to overtake again the blue guy and told myself, I should finish before him. I stopped running through UN Avenue to Kalaw as I was trying to strengthen my systems to finish strong.

Upon traversing the street of Kalaw, I ran and finished the course. Finishing ahead of the blue guy. I checked my timer and I clocked 1:10. I was a little disappointed since my best 10K PR is 1:09. But then, if I compare my previous Milo record with my new one, it is indeed a BIG improvement. My record in the July 5, Manila Eliminations was 1:26 and now I got it down to 1:10, therefore, a 16 minute diferrence is a great improvement. I still have to see though the official times as to be posted by Milo.

I am happy and fulfilled that I did this. Even though this time, I was running alone, I enjoyed it and maximized it to the fullest.

October 9, 2009

The next three weeks..

My next three weeks will be full. I am scheduled (and have signed up, READ: paid already) for the following races:

October 11, 2009 Milo Marathon Finals 10K
October 18, 2009 QC International Marathon 21K
Ocotber 25, 2009 Adidas King of the Road 10K

I am excited as hell for all the events for several reasons. For Milo, this will give me a gauge on how much I have improved since this is the first 10K (and first run) that I did. For the QCIM, I am excited as well because its my first half marathon. I even bought a Nathan for this run. For the Adidas, I really like the singlet. Good enough reason to make me happy and excited about the run. I hope I'll get good times this October. I guess I haven't trained that hard but for sure at least my other efforts will show. See you in these runs!

October 6, 2009

It's been so long...

I was bad these couple of weeks. I did not continuously ran. I did not follow my training. I just ran whenever I fell like running.

Now, I have to change. I am officially signed up for the Milo Marathon (10K) on October 11, 2009 and QCIM (21K) on October 18, 2009. I have to complete at least most of my trainings to be able to do good in these races. I ran tonight, will run on Thursday and will do good on Sunday for the Milo. This is what I am chanting right now.

September 22, 2009

I bought a Nathan Speed 2

As what I have said in my previous post, I have decided already to run my first 21K. And one of my pact to myself is that, if I decide to run more than 10K, I will buy myself a hydration belt. I did just that through careful research. I asked around some folks in takbo.ph (through a thread)on what to buy. Most of them endorsed the Nathan Speed as it can hold 1.5/2/4 flasks. It is ideal for different types of runners. I also considered buying the new Nike hydration belt but decided otherwise as it is more expensive and harder to find.

I was suppose to purchase my Nathan in Runnr but was not able to visit the store immediately since I do not have a ride going there. I checked some stores in Glorietta during our lunch time but was not able to find a Nathan. I checked online stores and found out that there is a stock at Toby's Park Square. I then decided to purchase one the following day. I was so excited when lunch time came, I rushed to Toby's. I asked the sales lady to give me a sample of the Speed 2 and Speed 4. Tried both on and decided on which one to get. As I am not the type who prefers to drink a lot during a run, thus I went for the Speed 2. It has 2-10oz flask where I can carry water on the other and a sport drink on another. There is also a small pocket which can hold my cellphone, keys and cash. It was perfect and I decided to get the large size in yellow and gray which costs Php 1,295.00.

The same night I bought my Speed 2, I decided to take it for a test run. I used both flask with 3/4 water and strapped it to myself. During the first steps, I find it too bouncy and checked if it can be minimized if I decide to fasten it better. I did just that and it worked. I also placed it somewhere in my mid-section to limit it bouncing against my butt. It worked and I feel like a total pro. My only comment was, I should have went for a medium.

All-in-all, I can say that Nathan Speed 2 is the most ideal hydration belt for me. It serves my requirements and needs in running and above everything else, it is also stylish.

I am so BRAVE... My decision for a 21K

I have only been running and joining races for about 3 months now. I thought, it will take me about a year or so before I decide to join a half marathon but that is not the case. Upon pondering on several trainings and races, I decided to run 21K for the QCIM. I decided on this one because of several reasons which are:

1. It is an international marathon and it is a pleasure to have my debut for the 21K here.
2. There are finishers medal for 21K and 42K only.
3. Tin (my running friend) is running 21K as well.
4. I don't wanna run 21K in the Milo marathon since I wanna see my improvement with the same route from the Manila eliminations to the finals on October 11. Alternatively, QCIM is the next rae after Milo.
5. I like how finishline (despite some issues they faced during Kenny) handle races.
6. There is a carbo loading dinner 2 days before the race.
7. The route is good. New for me.

So there are the reasons. Now, the only thing I need to do is to build milage and buy a hydration belt. I decided (as a gift to myself) that I will be buying Nathan Speed 2 since it has 2 flask -which I think is more than enough for me and it has a good bag size which can carry the essential iPod, cash and phone. I am also slated to join races in prep for this race:

10K Ayala Eco Dash- Sept 13 (Done)
10K New Balance- Sept 27
10K Milo Marathon- October 11

Thrilled and scared will be the 2 adjectives to which can describe how I am feeling right now for my runs. See you all at those races and for the QCIM.

Ayala Eco Dash Experience

It was raining the whole week and I was secretly wishing it wouldn't stop. I was signed up for the Ayala Eco Dash and I wouldn't miss it for anything. I skipped our barkada's usual boardgames Saturdays just to ensure I get a good sleep before my race.

I woke up the day of the race a little excited. It was still raining and I am already thinking of the challenges along our way. I am excited about this race for two reasons. First, it was for a cause - for the environment. Second, we will traverse the Kalayaan fly over which will by first time. The race was postponed for about 30 minutes to give time to those who are trying to catch up due to the rains. The initial plan of starting the 10K by 5:30 AM was pushed back to 6:00 AM. It was fine though specially the reason was valid. I didn't mind waiting an extra 30 minutes for the start.

There were some exercises prior to the gun start. It was cool. Although my comment is that we can barely hear the audio. I was thinking the stage was moved because of the rains. Then the gun was fired by 6:00AM. Everyone was excited and thrilled. We started running and it was a blast. There are a lot of obstacles in this run. For one, there are a lot of puddles. I keep on skipping most of them to try to secure my shoes but to no avail. There will be chances that you don't have a choice but to step on it. Later on, I didn't mind it anymore. Another challenge as well is trying not to slip. I guess running shoes are designed to be sturdy and slip-free but for someone like me who is "lampa" I could easily slip anytime.

I was pacing with my friend Tin (who finished sub-hour) for about the first kilometer or so. But Tin being a faster runner than I am overtook me and strengthened her pace. I decided to pace myself with my normal pacing. I was relazed, happy and confident. We were approaching the Kalayaan fly over when I felt something. I needed to pee! I didn't know what to do but I kept on running. I was doing fine and almost forgot about it. I decided, if I am going to pee, I will do it at Starbucks at 6750. The run along Kalayaan was a good experience. I was able to see everything. More than just running, I was sight seeing. I was enjoying the scenery and the experience.

When I alighted the flyover, I saw that my left shoelace came undone. I went to the side and secured my laces. This happened thrice for my left shoe and twice for my right. I guess the shoelace being wet triggers it to come undone. This is one minor negative thing about my Nike Lunar Glide. The shoelaces are slipping when wet. Bearable but at times it gets irritating.

We then turned to Paseo de Roxas. I was looking forward into looking at SOFA for a long time. While running the street, I realized that it was in a very poor condition. I am very much particular with roads and transporation due to my college background. I told myself, even the richest city in Manila have poor roads. I was nearing Mandarin Hotel and I am very excited to run along Makati Avenue and Ayala.

When I was passing through the main intersections of Makati, all the cars are horning! It was so bad to hear. Who would have thought that you could be stuck in traffic in Makati on a Sunday at 6-7AM. If I was in the shoes of those stuck in traffic, I would hate all of the people crossing the street running. Hehe.

We then turned in Landmark to enter the mid-way of the race. It was so comforting to run along the circle in front of Glorietta, The Link and 6750. It was a place I am very familiar to and has always been comfortable with. I even forgot to pee in Starbucks. :)

The run going back to the Fort was a blast. I didn't feel any pressure right now (Janina is that you?) I was just enjoying the run back. While at the top of the fly over running alongside some folks, I then heared something clanking. I thought it was my shoes and I immediately checked them and found out that it was not. I then turned around and discovered that it was coming from a guy in a pink shirt. As I have read in other blogs, I slowed down to let this guy pass me. But when I run back to my pace, I keep on catching up on him. I then decided to outrun the guy because I really get annoyed when something is clanking. I was quite successful and was able to pass the noise.

I was entering the Fort again and I thought, I did not even shed a single sweat. I know I am sweating somewhere but you can't feel it since I am already soked in rain water. I then got excited when I saw the Bonifacio High Street again and decided to increase my pace. I ran and was happy to turn and see the finish line. I did cross the finish line feeling the same feeling when I do. I feel contented and fulfilled.

I was the welcomed by Tin at the end of the finishline chute. She told me that I crossed the line at 1'39". Less the 30 minutes the 21K runners were ahead of us, I then registered a 1'09" run. I am happy as this is already a PR for me same as my Smash and Run 1'09". I'll be aiming for a 1'05 for my next race, The New Balance Race.

All in all my experience for this run was a blast. The rain is something new to me and I was happy to have done it. I also tip my hat off to the organizers for creating a successful, complete and simple run focusing on the main points of what a run should be. Enough marshalls, enough water stations. I would recommend though that they increase the number of markers as to what distance we have achieved already.

Kudos to everyone who completed this run and see you all in New Balance on September 27. :)

Ayala Eco Dash

I am officially signed-up for the Ayala Eco Dash on September 13, 2009 at the Fort. This will be my first 10K running over the Kalayaan Fly Over. I am pretty excited about it. I initially was not suppose to run anymore in this event because they ran out of Singlets. But for some connections, someone asked me if I have registered and he has connections within Ayala who can still give us singlets. I am now signed-up with Tin for the 10K. Yahoo!!! See ya...

Next Run: New Balance, Milo Finals (21K hopefully) and QCIM

September 9, 2009

Frustrated, hurt and traumatized!!!

My last run was Thursday last week. I know a lot of people have told me that I can still run even if it is raining but I just can't push myself to run knowing that afterwards, there will be a big effort from my end to dry my shoes again. If there is one thing I do not like about running, that is my shoes becoming dirty. I am officially frustrated with the weather. I can't help but get angry with the climate change. I now decided that I will run for the Ayala Eco Dash but to my surprise I got more frustrated. There is no more singlet. I inquired through the Glorietta booth last Friday and they still have all the sizes. Now, not even one is available. I am trying to register via a collegue who has some connections there. Thats double frustration o my end.

Hurt I am but not emotionally but physically. I was running last Thursday and it was mildly raining. I decided to finish my course since I am pushing myself to do a 5K without running. I did and was overtaking a pedestrian along CCP area when I accidentally fell of the sidewalk. I slipped and tumbled. It was so shameful because I rolled over the pavement in front of some walkers and some manongs selling buko. Whew! I decided to run still to save my face from detection. I thought it was just a mild impact but to my surprise, I got a bruise, scratches and a bump in my knee. Though the physical wounds have subsided, I still have my remembrance from the fall... the bruise.

Apart from my the "hurt" I got. There was also a small traumatic experience. While doing the first half of my training run. I was attacked by a dog being walked by his owner. This is a typical house dog which was quite cute since his fur is white. I got scared. Major. I am not normally scared of dogs but when one attacks you and his fangs so close to your body, I guess one cannot help but get traumatized.

I know these are all learnings from running. Now, I could say I am rich in experience. :)

I'll run again tonight. Hell with the rain.

Running and Sustainability

In my life, there are a lot of things I started but was not able to sustain. Things like singing, gyming, swimming etcetc are just some of the things I tried doing but due to lack of encouragement and drive, I fail to sustain. I love running and have been doing it for about 3 months now. I admit that there are times that I beg off to run for some silly reasons. Some of them just because I am too lazy or sometimes its because of the weather. Keeping the abovementioned system in mind, I listed some items to ensure I sustain running and are as follows:

1. Target Weight - I want to lose weight. Big time. And through running, this is really possible. I always remind myself that if I run right now for 5K, I will lose a pound and I will be achieving my target weight in no time.
2. I sign-up for races - Since I value my money much and I don't like being at the back of the pack, I train for races. Because race dates are fixed, I am pushed to train harder and try to get a PR every run.
3. Get a Running Club - I just recently spoke with our HR head and we agreed that this is a good idea. We have formulated a club and we will be running every Tuesday in Salcedo. Exiting and fun.
4. Shopping - weird as it may sound but this keeps me motivated. This could be attributed to two parts actually. First is shopping for new running gear. I told myself that if I reach 100K I will buy a running shorts and if I will be elevating to 21K runs, I will be buying a hydration belt. This is my goal/gift for myself. Second, I really wanna drop sizes in clothes. I am feeling that my clothes are getting bigger but I will only buy clothes by October so I am sure that I have lost a size already.

I believe these goals and tasks keeps me motivated leading to a sustainable running.

I will run. Yes... I will run tonight.

Smash and Run Experience

Yesterday was the Smash and Run held in Greenhills Shopping Center. I spent the night before at Anne's place so we cloud go together to the venue. I ran the 10K with Tin Ferrera and then Anne and Donna ran the 3K. Eggy and Paula ran the 3K as well. I was signed up by Donna since the event was sponsored by Sun Cellular. She was waving all the way to collegues she sees everywhere. The event turnout was quite good. I can see familiar faces of people I have seen in the previous races I have joined.

We arrived at the venue at around 5:30 and looked for Anne's brother to give out his and her girlfriend's race packet. We then proceeded to the starting line. While walking, Tin handed me a Jelly Bean. It was the power Jelly Beans with electrolytes that will help you boost your energy. I immediately took one from her. We then walked and I felt that I needed to use the rest room. I was pointed to a portalet by one of the guards. When I arrived at the area of the portalet, there is a long line for the guys. I was the 6th guy in the line and there is only 5 minutes before gun start. At about a minute to go, I was still third in line. The guy in front turned back and saw that my singlet was red (indicating I'm a 10K runner)and asked me if I want to go ahead. I did and was very thankful to the 2 guys in front of me. Whoever you are guys, kudos to you! :)

When I went out of the portalet, the gun was fired. I immediately ran to the start line and was able to go with the flow of runners starting. I then ran through my normal pace. I was quite excited at this time because it was my first time to run in Greenhills. I am not even familiar with the place that much. I just went with the flow. I was quietly pacing with a female runner who is an iamNinoy runner. I think we are of the same pace so I ensured I do not lose sight of her. Since I was pacing with her, I was able to fight the urge to walk for the first 4K which was a very good distance already. I then started brisk walking by then briefly and ensured I run back after a block or so. I am quite happy that I can still see the female iamNinoy runner. The track seems like forever since there are a lot of turns and streets. It was fulfilling in a diffent way since I was able to sightsee.

Notes about the event:

The event was a success. Nice turn out since there are pros and newbies in the crowd. There are the endorsers of Mizuno, pro runners wearing the tights, newbies just enjoying the 3K.

The starting/finish line was nice looking as well. All the sponsors are visible and they are even allocated with tents inside the event area. There is a stage with a host which entertained most of the people in the crowd. There are however some things I was expecting to be in the event which was lacking. The presence of TV personalities. I thought the event will be attended by Sun endorser Iya Villania and honey Drew Arellano since both of them are runners. It would have been great if both of them we're there to have handed some prizes and ran the race as well. Maybe there is a conflict in their schedule.

The water stations are also strategically placed. I am surprised however that there are no power drink stations considering Rush is a sponsor. We were contemplating after the race that there might be a fall-out of the sponsorship resulting to the non-participation of Rush. I was contented however to just drink water. The thing I believe should be improved in this race is the marshalls attitude. I heard from the grapevine that the marshalls are trash talking the last runners for some categories. People might take this positively or negatively. Some may take it lightly as something funny while some of them might get hurt that there are already the last runners and there are people who are not supportive of them.

I also would like to commend this event for something I found nice. It might be a small detail but I really liked it. The lace they provide when you turn around a specific u-turn slot are not notched. They are melt together hence there it is not distracting to wear around your neck. Another thing I liked about this race is the ensured loot bag. From all the races I have joined, I have yet to retrieve a loot bag. The event provided a loot bag with a water, C2 and bag of healthy chips. This is a good practice since most runners are thirsty or hungry by the end of the race.

All-in-all, this race is a very good one. It is well attended and the logistics are up to standard. I am looking forward to another race sponsored by the Greenhills Shopping Center.

Running in the Rain

I was doing my usual run when I saw some lightning. At first, I didn't mind the lightning since it always does during the night. I coursed through my usual route and a little bit after my turn in CCP, it rained. It rained really hard. Good thing is that there is a covered area at the Marina Yatch Club. I went in and waited for the rain to subside. I checked immediately my iPod and ensured that it is still working.

When the rain subsided, I ran again with my iPod secured in my pocket. I ran and ran and ran. When I was about 2 blocks away from my house, the rain was just pouring down. I was all wet. I needed to stop one block away from my house to ensure my iPod will not get wet. I waited and waited until nothing. The rain was not stopping. I then decided to run the last block and submerged myself into the rain.

If my iPod was not with me, I would ran in the rain contented. But my iPod ruined it all. Haha.

I would definitely run the rain sometime.

Catching the Bull Runner

It was my first time last Friday to be able to step foot on the Runnr. I was amazed that there is a store solely dedicated for running. You can find there shoes, outfit and all items you might need for running.

I had my running tested and I found out that I am a forefoot runner. They guy who assisted me told me that the shoes I bought (Lunar Glides) is quite soft for me and I should wear ankle sleeves to support my aching ankle. I did just that and while I was paying at the counter, I saw the stack - of the Bull Runner Magazine.

Without hesitation, I got hold a copy for myself. The magazine is already the second issue. They featured on the cover Drew Arellano, who I didn't know had a passion for running. The magazine also featured him in a 3-page article (and photos) where he shared how he influenced his siblings, father and his girlfriend Iya to share with him his passion. I am happy that running has been getting into everyone now.

The magazine has a lot of advertisement that are relative to running. I personally find these interesting - Photovendo, Gatorade and Dole. I did not know that there is an online store selling photos of running. This came quite handy when I ran the Kenny's Urbanite. Photovendo was there to take our photos and was up 2-3 days from the event. For those who joined the run, visit http://urbanite.photovendo.ph to see your photos. Disclaimer: Almost everyone looked weird because the photos where taken a couple of steps from the finish line. The Gatorade advertisement was something I really read. It was full of information why a runner need a sports drink and water. It gave me more information so I can strategically drink on stations for my next runs. And lastly, I didn't know that banana was for cramps until I saw Dole's advertisement. Originally, I thought the reason for eating banana is to have a full stomach but apparently, it has more use that that.

I would give 4 thumbs up -including my running feet- to the Bull Runner Running Magazine. It straightens up one's knowledge on running and the things accompanying it. The magazine is specially tailor made for a runner because it was done for and by a runner.

Congratulations Jaymie on this wonderful creation and I am looking forward for the next issue. For more updates, visit her site at http://thebullrunner.com.

My Kenny Roger's Urbanite Experience

I was very excited for the Urbanite. Since we encountered some issues when claiming our race kits, I needed to come back to BHS early on race day. I went there at around 3PM and claimed Herbert's singlet. Since there is no more small size I got him a medium like Jiggs and Joma. I then met Jiggs (who is celebrating his 25th Birthday that day) at around 3:30. I greeted him with glee and we decided to hangout by Bo's coffee to check out emails and surf the net. We stayed there until we decided to get ready for our run by buying some stuff at Mini Stop at Market Market.

After our short trip to Mini Stop, we then met Joma and Herbert at the parking lot to drop our bags and officially get ready for our run. I distributed our race packets and got dressed. We wore our singlets and tied our timing chips to our shoes.

We then went to the assembly area on time as prescribed but nothing is happening yet. We then decided to stroll around and we found the event to be full or runners and family of runners. The event was successful as it is. I was feeling a little uncomfortable that time because my ankle is still hurting. I then made a decision to finally buy an ankle support from runnr. I bought the support and fitted it. I then prayed that this will help me through my run.
8:30 came and it is about time to go to the starting line. We flocked to the area together but I have to separate ways with my friends as I am running for the 10K and they are all doing the 5K. I did just that and waited for my gun start. I was in a very huge crowd. Apparently, there are about a thousand running the 10K.

Marc Nelson counted down, shot the gun and we're off.

I stared my run at my normal pace. I was actually enjoying the scenery both the place and the view of other runners. After around 3K, I started walking. We then entered the route going to Lawton which was quite dark. Even though it was dark, I was not afraid because I was pacing with some people and there are a lot of marshalls. I think this was a strength of this race. They pre-empted the dark areas and they placed the marshalls strategically. Water stations are also ample. My comment though is that not both water and power drink were available at all stations. Personally, I prefer to drink water in the first few stations and then power drink at the later part of the run. This is my strategy in the end to ensure I can still bring out my energy. I am charging this to experience.

I ran and ran. We then entered Mc Kinley. I was actually excited because I have never been there. And I also heard that there are slopes. I haven't run in slopes so I was pretty looking forward to it. I started alright but was so tired during the uphills. It is a pain! I can feel my body weight and all the energy drink I drank at the first few stops. It then dawned on me that I have to really lose weight - Big Time.

The last 2K was long for me. I started doubting if I can finish it and was not finding anymore strength to sprint. I just decided to do whatever pace I can. Upon seeing the lights at the finish line, I got pumped up. I decided to still run my last 0.5K and finish with a grand sprint. I did that but was quite dismayed. The time registered for the 10K was 1:22. I was aiming for a good PR at about 1:10 but I was not able to do it. Even though that was sad, I still felt contented in finishing the race. I was then walking to our "meeting place" when I saw Herbert, Joma and Jiggs clapping for me. I was like - "Why are you clapping?" and they all told me congratulations for finishing the 10K. I felt very good then. I knew I had good friends.

We went to the party area and I got my finisher's certificate. I also ensured that I dropped the Donate portion of our stubs to show my support for the event's cause. After all the effort and hardship, its now time to go and celebrate Jiggs' quater life crisis. LOL.

The run was fun. It made me strive harder to be better and gave me my first night and chip timed race.

Signed Up!!! Kenny Rogers Ubanite Run 09

Me and my friends are officially signed-up for the Kenny Roger's Urbanite. I am running 10K while my friends are running the 5K (Joma, Herbert and Jiggs - Happy Birthday on this day). I am pretty excited about this race for several reasons:

1. It will be held at the Fort. A new surrounding for me :).
2. It will be at night. Kakaiba!
3. Cool new items such as timing chip, glow in the dark wristband (dunno what is this), glow in the dark race bib (daw!).
4. It will be hosted by Marc Nelson and Rovilson will be running. I am a big fan of the duo from Amazing Race.
5. There will be an after party. I doubt that I will be able to go since we will be celebrating Jiggs' and Mikee's birthdays in a spa in Antipolo. Happy birthday to both!!!

If you wanna check out the site, you can visit their link:

I'll be flocking Bonifacio High Street on Thursday to retrieve our race kits after office hour. Anybody is invited to join me. :)

My Longer Training Route

I have been contented in running my usual 4.6K route. I am accustomed to its surroundings and feel perfect with it and have been using this path for about 4 months now. Upon reading more and more of other blogs, I learned that I should also do longer trainings specially during the weekends where I usually have more time. I then extended my normal US Embassy-CCP-US Embassy route to US Embassy-CCP-Folks Art-PICC-Sofitel-World Trade-CCP-US Embassy.
The new route was of course longer but it didn't feel so. Maybe because I was running briskly and I was enjoying the scenery as well. Mind you, I was running at 12:00 Noon. Even though there was much heat, my run was perfect. I didn't knew that running in a new surrounding could be that enjoyable. I then told myself to do this again and probably extend to other routes as well.
I'd probably try running the route of the Milo 10K. Luneta-EDSA and back.

Family Run Run 2009 Review

I have posted last Sunday my experience with the Family Fun Run and now, I would like to share with you the event logistics. Things I liked and things I think should be improved.

The event started late due to some reasons I don't know of. Patrick and I arrived at 4:00PM which was the check-in time but nothing was happening. We roamed around and tried looking for things happening. There were several booths lined up such as Crocs, Shell, some bike company and other sponsors. I guess this is one of the good parts of the race because we were entertained by the "stuff" around prior to the race. We waited and waited until 4:30 which should have been the gun start already and apparently, there is still a programme prior to the race. Everybody were encouraged to gather in front of the stage but not much folks are following since there are no ushers whatsoever. I felt bad for the organizer-Ken because I can see him doing the actual ushering. Should this have been part of his role, I am not sure. But I guess, this being an event sponsored by the City Government, there should have been ushers.

And then the programme started. There were the councilors, sports commission heads who spoke. I felt that most of the speech were not necessary anymore because they are just redundant from each other. I felt important however, is the speech of the male councilor from District 5. He himself is a runner and encouraged the young ones to get into running. It is very cheap and it takes you away from drugs. All the speeches were followed with an aerobic exercise. I felt it was too tacky but it was a hit with the audience (OK fine, I was amazed too). Some oldies were doing the exercise and it was fun to see that they are able to do so with such age. :) Congrats mga lolo at lola!!!

While the aerobics is still on going, I heard the hosts called the 10K runners to stand at the start point already. I then followed and waited for the gun shot. The run started easy. There were water stations strategically placed. Upon the 1.25K, we turned around Kalaw and I got the mandatory yellow lace. The women volunteers were very kind in giving them. This is one thing I liked about the race. The lace women are nice. They extend the effort in handing you the lace with their hands stretched. You really don't need to slow down or anything just to get it. As I go on with the race, I became thirsty and started stopping at the water stations. There were some stations unmanned which I really find weird. No cups just big water bottles with a knob. I guess this is something the organizers have to check on. Water stations are IMPORTANT to runners.

Other things I observed in the race that I found great are the standby Ambulance, which of course will come in handy if there is a casualty, the police on standby to direct the private cars directing to Roxas Blvd to re-route and the casual marshalls along the race which I know the responsibility is to ensure that everything will be well attended given that there is a situation.

I would say that the thing I did not like that much about this race is the attendance. I wouldn't say that the attendance generated is great. There are families, yes, but I think there were just few. Also, I felt that the students from the different schools are mandated by their teachers to attend just so the event will not transfor to a complete flop. There is also a lack of attendance from more serious runners.

All-in-all, I would say that the Family Fun Run 2009 is a success. There are still some things that needs to be improved but there are more better things which overshadowed that. I am looking forward in attending more races organized by Ken Montegrande and the MASCO.

My Family Fun Run 2009 Experience

I was really excited to run 10K today since the last time I did a 10K race is during the Milo Marathon last July 5. I got ready around 2:30PM since I am meeting Patrick by 3:00 and we will be walking to the venue. Unfortunately, Patrick over slept and was a little late from our scheduled time. It was OK though since we still got to the venue at 4:00 which was the check-in time.

The event started with a program where everyone on stage spoke. It was long and boring. I didn't feel the need of some of them talking anymore. It just so happen that this race is a government event and these people should be doing some speech. The thing different from this race is that, there is a group of oldies who did some aerobics prior to the race. At first, I felt it was "baduy" but it was a hit with the crowd and I was also amazed. Unfortunately, I did not able to finish the act since they already announced that the 10K participants should check-in already at the starting point. I did just that with Patrick even though he was suppose to run the 3K only.

When the gun was shot, everybody immediately ran and I was just standing. I was configuring my iPod to time my race. Upon doing so, I ran and was feeling really good because I was pacing with the firefly joggers and they are quite fast. Upon entering 1.25K, I felt something weird. I stomach started to cramp. Yes, I didn't know too that there is such thing in running as stomach cramps. I needed to walk and let the pain subside a little. I was debating in my head the pros and cons of stopping at 2.5k. I then gave myself sometime to recover while walking (ala Park mode) and it did subside at about 3K. I continued running and was approaching 4K when it started to drizzle. Afraid of being electrocuted or permanently damaging my iPod, I started walking again and placed it inside a plastic bag (which I brought). Then I felt bad. I was not yet halfway through the race and I already did some major walking. I thought to myself, my time will definitely be longer than my Milo's. I started running and was pacing with a woman. I ensured that I will not be left behind by her. I was actually successful until my 6.25K. She glided faster and I was left behind. I then started pacing on my own again. I then became comfortable since I decided that this will be just a lesson race for me and I will try to be better at the Kenny's. I ran, walk, run to the finish line expecting to have a time of around 1:40. But to my surprise, when I checked the clock after I passed through the finish line and got my mandatory certificate, that the time in the clock is 1 hr 19 mins. I was shocked as hell as I did a lot of walking. I said to Patrick, "I really thought I wouldn't surpass my Milo record. But I did". I don't know what my official time was since I saw the clock several seconds or probably a minute upon finishing. I saw someone writing my number upon my finish so I hope they listed it down and made available for everybody's benefit.

I then chatted with Patrick after in Brothers Burger and asked how did he do. Apparently, he ran 5K. Which is really weird since the only categories were 3K and 10K. He said he did not followed the rules and didn't even cross the finish line. I didn't know why he did not do it. It is the best part of the race for me. Crossing the finish line.

Congratulations were still in order since this is the first time that Patrick ran a 5K and I gave him that. He then told me that he actually thought he ran 10K but appareantly, you need to run the whole distance again to do the 10K. He was still happy.

The funny story here was when he finished and I was nowhere to be seen, he suspected of a weird scenario. There were ambulance on standy by (of course, for very obvious reasons) and he thought that I was in an ambulance. It was as funny as hell.

All-in-all, there are a lot of good and bad things that happened during this race. First, I set another PR for me and second, I experienced stomach cramps.

I will definitely train harder for the Kenny Urbanite. I want a better record with the chip system.

Nike Lunar Glide Review

At last, it is not raining! Therefore I was able to test my Nike Lunar Glide on the pavement.

I started my run through my normal start point. That will be the entance for the US Embassy along Roxas Blvd. I timed myself to see if I am able to run faster/slower using my new Glides. Upon start, it felt really good. Unlike my normal training shoes, I cannot feel the ground hitting my feet. The cushioning on this shoes is superb and I can only wish for anything but that. I then glided through my normal route. People are actually looking at my blue-apple green glides since it looks like its glowing. Funny it may sound but it really does. I then continued running and did feel good about it. Before, with my old rubber shoes, I feel some pressure along my legs' side. I think this could be attributed by the impact when my feet meets the ground. With the new glides, it was gone and it was flawless. I continued running and for about 1.5K, I started to feel the normal tiredness already. I then checked my foot and started to feel some uncomfort. I then realized that the glides are actually slanting when you step them on. The side of the shoes towards the other foot is slightly higher than the other side. As I was not accustomed to this kind of shoes, I felt some unease. I still continued running and was relieved that the uncomfort faded away at around 2.5K. I then concluded that it was just my foot adjusting to the shoes.

As I turned around from CCP, I felt the need to walk. I did just that and checked my shoes again. It is still intact and I can still feel my feet. I then tried examining the insole through moving my foot. The insole feel clean. No untowards stitching and bumps anywhere. Although I must say that the heel area has a lot of room. This may be advantageous to new runners like me as I can really feel comfort the "spaces" gives.

I continued running at 3K till my 4.8K end. The shoes are still working fine.

My iPod registered that my time was around 37 minutes. Slightly above than my usual 35. I guess this is attributed to the fact that I did not have my earphones and I was not listening to upbeat songs rather than blaming it to my new babies... I mean shoes. :)

All-in-all, my first experience with my glides is fabulous. Here is a run down of things I like and things I think that should have been improved.

Likey
  1. Soft cushioning - prevent me from having leg aches
  2. Nice insole. Clean and comfortable.
  3. Lightweight!
  4. Nice colors. LOL

Improve!

  1. Cushioning height -due to the cushioning, I was elevated for about 1 inch from the ground. I was kind of afraid since I do have the tendency to have "tapiloks".

I will definitely use my glides for my runs and I am recommending it for newbies. It offers the support a necomer to the sport should have. :)

Note: Thanks to my dad for buying me the shoes. Thanks POP!

Officially Registered for Family Fun Run 2009

I have officially registered for the Family Fun Run 2009. The booth is located at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila. To get there, you can alight at the Quirino Station of LRT and walk towards the street where Puregold is. Go straight and you will see on your right is the sports complex. Alternatively, you can ride a Mabini jeepney from wherever and alight at Malate Church. The complex is very near Adriatico. There is a table at the entrance with a banner in it which serves as the booth. Both of the guys manning the booth are accommodating although they have given me wrong information about the event. Good thing I always read whatever is in the packet and I then learned the right time for assembly and gun start. They will also be providing a race map which is quite confusing. I am relying on the day itself to ask the organizers the right route for the 10K.

Inside the packet you should be getting the following: A race number and 4 safety pins, singlet AKA running shirt, race mechanics and route info and some flyers from sponsors.

The fun run will be this Sunday, August 2, 2009 starting at Rajah Sulayman Park at Malate. Assembly time is at 4PM and gun start for the 10K and 3K are at 4:30PM and 5:00PM respectively.

I am offically runner 1190. See you all there!

I bought a Nike Lunar Glide+

Lovin' it. :)

I have been running since April with my normal gym shoes or what they categorize as "training". The reason why I did not purchase a new pair yet is because I do not want to get myself a pair that wouldn't work. I read from someone else's blog that she got a Newton but it did nothing for her and she is going back to her NBs. I researched very hard about my ideal shoes and I had 3 main factors upon deciding which one would be "IT": 1) It should be lightweight. I find heavy shoes for office better but for fitness and running, I wanted something light 2) Should work with me as a new runner (READ: will not be painful for my legs and knees). I read from somewhere that there are adviseable shoes for newbies and some other for experienced and 3) It should look good. I think this is a given for me.

I then decided just last week that I will be getting the new Nike Lunar Glides which debuted this July 2009. There are 2 colors to choose for mens and I chose the blue and apple green. I know it may be quite shocking but the color reflects my personality. :)

I tried the shoes first time in Nike MOA and felt that this is really is it. It was cushioned the way I wanted it and feels just right. My only comment would be, it is high. As in, like I'm about an inch and a half above the ground. Although I don't really mind because it works. :)

I then told the Nike personnel to give me my size for the 2 colors. Unfortunately, they do not have my size for the black and orange but I still tried the half size bigger. My mom and my dad deliberated on which one to get and we decided to get the blue /apple green instead. I was on cloud 9. Aside from buying the shoes that I like, which is quite expensive at 5,490 (ata), my dad paid for it. Talk about free shoes! Thanks POP.

Should be testing it by now but it is raining (again). So I might test it out tomorrow at the gym. I am predicting it will rain tomorrow.

I'd blog my first experience with my Nike LunarGlide sometime soon. :)

Running... without and iPod

My earphones broke. I ran today without and iPod and was thinking that it is a great way to listen to myself. How I land on the ground and how I breath. Itfelt nice since I can hear that my breathing is normal and I hit the ground pretty well.

With earphones broken, I am not thinking if this is the best time that I buy a new iTouch or an iPod Nano since I want to buy the Nike+ as well. Still thinking about it and I hope to have a decision soon. :)

July 22, 2009

I officially hate rainy days...

I have been trying to ensure I run at least 4 times a week but to no avail. You know what the reason is? The RAIN. Before, I used to love the rain. I feel comfortable with it. With all the coldness it brings and the comfort it gives my body. Now, I am starting to despise it. When it rain, I cannot run outdoors. Yes, I can run inside a gym via treadmill but it feels better to run outside.

Thank God its not raining anymore. But I have loads of things to attend in the evenings this week. I feel bad about not reaching my goal of running 4 times a week and I know I should work out something with my schedule.

I am going to run tomorrow and on Saturday. Thats 2 plus one treadmill run yesterday. 3 for this week -Acceptable.

Family Fun Run August 2, 2009

In my attempt to further strengthen my core, I will be joining this Family Fun Run (for 10K) on August 2, 2009 at the Rajah Sulayman Park at Roxas Blvd. Right now, I do not have anyone to run with me YET. Nobody has confirmed. So to those interested to participate, let me know. I have the forms and I know the place where to submit it. Above is the official poster of the run.

Kenny Roger's Urbanite Challenge August 15, 2009

A friend of mine and I have this pact that we will be running a 21K this October at either Milo Marathon or Quezon City Marathon. And for training, we will be joining different 10K runs. This will hopefully prepare us by building our core competencies as runners and better our time record.

In line with this goal, I am signing up for the Kenny Roger’s Ubanite challenge this August 15 (happy bday Jiggs!). I secured the form already from Kenny Rogers Glorietta 3. I am also expecting several friends to run the 5K race.

You may be asking why is it called “Urbanite”, its because the race will be done at night. This will at the Fort. This will be different and quite challenging. So for all those who wants to join, go now to the nearest Kenny Rogers food chain and grab your registration forms.

REACH Fun Run Experience

I saw this schedule of marathons in the Philippines and I saw the REACH fun run slated last July 11, 2009 at the Fort Bonifacio open field. I read through the website hyperlink and saw that this was for a cause. The full meaning of REACH is Run, Eat And help CHange the World. The fun run was just 5K. You need to run the first 2.5K and then you have to stop to consume 4 original glazed doughnuts. Then run or walk the remaining 2.5K.

I joined the fun run together with Patrick, Herbert and Joma. But unfortunately, they were not able to finish the run. They stopped midway where they need to eat the doughnuts. According to Joma and Herbert, they cannot consume the 4 doughnuts while Patrick is too tired to finish the race.

We were lucky enough to arrive early in the venue and be one of the first registant. Even though we am not part of the first 100 to sign-up online, we were able to get the free shirt since some of the original signees did not show up. It does pay to come in early.

My official time is 35:00 minutes (according to my beloved iPod). Not bad considering I spent around 3-5 minutes eating the doughnut in between the run.

Thanks to: Jiggs Nava for taking our photos during the run. You should be at the Kenny Running with us, OK?

MILO Marathon Manila Elimination

I started running around April not to join races or marathons but to get fit and shed some pounds. I then run at Roxas Blvd without any pressure or goal. My main aim then when I run is not to get mugged.

But when I heard about the Milo Marathon, I got intrigued and did some research on my own. I learned that everyone could join and its not actually a competition but an event fostering camaraderie and brotherhood. I then signed up with my P&G friends for the 10K run. Initially, my runner friend told me that I was aiming for too much. I should have started at 5K. But then, I have signed up already and there is no turning back. I then trained harder and harder. Got tips from friends and read a lot of running blogs.

I then got my shirt for the race. A size smaller from what I signed up for. But it did fit me anyways so it was not that much of an issue. My problem then was, I did not get my bib. All the while, I thought it was going to be distributed at the gun point but I was mistaken. An hour prior to the gun start, I saw everyone in their bib. I panicked and tried to look for the technical booth. After 40 minutes of looking, I saw a friend of mine and pointed me to the right tent. I then gave my name to the female attendant and they were able to retrieve my official number. They wrote it in a half sheet of bond paper and told me to surrender upon finish. I hid it in my short’s pocket and ran to the gun point. I arrived around 2-3 minutes before Bayani Fernando shot the gun. Whew. Talk about photofinish.

I was able to finish the 10K without much problem. I got all the water and Gatorade I needed from the stations which I felt was quite adequate for the distance that I ran. The finish line did not refelct the time of finish for the 10K and I just assumed tat my time was 1:30 based on the amount of songs played in my iPod.

I then googled Milo Marathon the day after and saw that they do get the finish time of each finisher. I was quite sad because I have this feeling that mine was not registered due to my lost bib. To my surprise, it was registered and I was able to finish my 10K in 1:26:01. Not bad for a first timer.

See screen shot of Milo Result:

I finished 1063 out of 1304. Quite at the back of the pack. But what matters most is that, I AM happy.

PS. I found my bib. It was stucked to the packet where I got my shirt. Lesson learned.
